M.A. Program in Population and Development:

Beginning the academic year 2001-2002 the International Graduate Program in Population and Development (IGPPD) leading to Master of Arts (M.A.) started at Department of Sociology (DSPS), Shiraz University. The DSPS was established under the college of Literature and Humanities on the principle that an interdisciplinary approach is indispensable for developmental efforts. Sociology, anthropology, demography and regional planning are currently offered in undergraduate curriculum. The M.A. program in population and development is advantageously built into the multidisciplinary framework of DSPS. In todays world the study of population is an indispensable part for development of the extensive social welfare. This graduate program represents a response to the growing concern and appreciation of the role of population in shaping the nature of societies and the quality of life. The training curriculum is designed for enhancing the knowledge of students on demography and the rapidly progressing analytical methodologies for population studies. The immediate aim of the graduate program is to train middle level professionals to meet the manpower needs of planning and development organizations in the I.R. of Iran. Students successfully completing the M.A. degree may serve as demographers in various educational institutions, planning organizations, health agencies and may carry research and data collection and analysis in ministries and government organizations. Currently there are 25 national and international students in the IGPPD program.
